Dear Grandchildren:
This month we have a grandchild that will be graduating from Gaylord High School. We congratulate Jacob for his achievements and honors he’s accumulated so far. He will be attending Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Michigan as a step in his pursuit of a physical therapy vocation.
Jacob has been a wonderful big brother to his two sisters and three brothers. Ryley told me that she valued her relationship with him, and they have become very close. Jacob has been a wonderful role model and a great student at GHS. He ended up with a 3.4 GPA over all.
Commencement is both an ending and a beginning. You have so many possibilities and opportunities, Jacob. You will have a lifetime of achievements, exciting adventures, and meaningful relationships. I can tell you with certainty, Jacob, that adventure is ahead for you. At this stage of your life, the future is thrilling and filled with great potential.
One thing I can share with you Jacob, and all of you reading this is: Make your relationships a priority.
Your friends from high school and college will last a lifetime. Your wealth in life will not be measured by your balance sheet because you cannot take it with you in the end. Life’s wealth is comprised of the friends and family you hold dear. So do what it takes to keep your relationships alive and well.
I hope that you realize that the Bible works, especially if we do what it says. What I have learned in my seventy-three years is that following what it says makes life better, happier, more fulfilling, and more abundant.
The Bible also tells us if we want to find ourselves, we must lose ourselves in the service of others. I have noticed over the last few years, Jacob, how thoughtful and respectful you are toward others. I truly believe those characteristics are universal for one’s success in life.
The Bible tells us not to love money, and it gives us a way to help make sure our priorities are in the right place. Always remember, God created the world and all that is within it, so in a real way, he owns everything including us.
And the Bible records the words of Paul, ”Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on those things”. Philippians 4:8 KIV
If you live by that charge, you will enjoy the serenity and peace that Paul experienced. Yes, the lessons taught in the Bible and the gospel of Jesus Christ are meant for you, and for your happiness here and now.
Jacob, we congratulate you in this wonderful step into adulthood. Always know that Grandma and I are always proud of your accomplishments, but we are especially proud of you!
Until next month,
Love,
Grandpa
