Dear Grandchildren:
One of my most favorite Bible stories is Luke 15 about the two prodigal sons. Jesus tells this wonderful story of the unconditional love of his Father God, but it’s a sad story of two sons who didn’t understand their earthly father they lived with.
The younger son was the worst because he demanded his inheritance which he eventually wasted. Once he was broke, he fed pigs for a living. As the story continues, he finally comes to his senses, returns home, and receives his father’s forgiveness.
The older brother remained on the farm, but sadly enough didn’t understand his father. He was as lost as his younger brother and according to the story, he never “came to his senses”. He was a son trying to earn his father’s love.
The story reminds us that we must come to our senses and realize it’s always about our relationship with God. Coming to our senses means realizing God loves us and desires to have an intimate relationship with us.
As I read this Bible story, three lessons speak to me:
- First, our heavenly Father who created us in His image is always ready to receive us into His family if we will humble ourselves and come to Him. It’s never too late to do this.
- Secondly, the younger son did all the wrong things, completely making a mess of his life. But in the end, he came to his senses and returned to his father to face him with repentance and honesty. And in the end, the younger son became the champion of the story.
- Thirdly, the older son, who thought he was righteous, became the real loser. Jesus used him as an example of people who hide behind their religious frame of mind. He points out again that it’s not about earning God’s favor through our behavior, but it’s always about receiving God’s grace through our relationship with Him.
So, Grandpa, what are you tell us?
Everything you do begins with a decision first and then following up with action. Whether it’s a good decision or a bad choice, it starts with your greatest power—your choice! How serious you are with that choice will determine the action you take.
And Grandchildren, if you make good choices and take immediate action, I will see you at the top!
Always know how much I love you,
Grandpa
