Dear Grandchildren:
This month I’d like to talk to you about authority. It can be a very confusing subject, but it’s very important for you to understand. Let me share with you a scripture that talks about “all” authority.
Romans 13:1-2 NKJV: “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.”
Now as you can see, I’m coming at this subject from a Christian point of view.
First of all, it says “let every soul” be subject to the governing authorities. What this is saying is, God appoints all authority. This is very important! We have to settle this truth first in our hearts and mind.
To rebel against those in authority is to rebel against the authority of God himself and those who do, bring judgment on themselves. Too many see themselves accountable only to God and not to authorities.
Because we live in a democratic culture, it’s easy to be resistant people regarding truly hearing God’s word concerning authority. It’s hard to understand Kingdom principles with a democratic mindset.
Democracy has its place for nations of the world; after all, government should be “of the people”, “by the people”, and “for the people”. Right?
To often today, if you don’t agree with authority, we can challenge it through complaints or protests. It’s then very easy to develop a greater degree of contempt for authority; thus, we lose the complete respect for the fear of God. I am very concerned today with our country with so many people dishonoring the offices of those in charge.
As Christians, we are in God’s kingdom and his kingdom is ruled by a King. A kingdom where they’re driven by kingdom principles and where Jesus isn’t swayed by popular opinion or popular vote.
A few years ago, I realized this for myself. I was so against the Democratic Party and those in charge including our President. With my negative attitude and lack of respect for the office, I couldn’t even pray with a right perspective. When I finally realized my error, I prayed for our leaders and committed them to God. My outlook and confidence changed because I put my trust in God.
It’s the same principle, Grandchildren, when the Bible says to honor your father and mother because it’s the right thing to do. By the way, this command comes with a blessing that promises you a longer life if you obey:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:1-3 NKJV)
Does this mean your parents are always right? No! But they are your parents. And when you don’t agree with them, honor God by honoring them, and you will receive God’s favor by doing so.
It’s the same principle when you work for a company and you’re under a boss. You can honor God by the way you submit yourself to their authority no matter how effective your boss is.
Think about this, Grandchildren, God–who loans you life– see’s every move you make, hears every word you speak, and knows your every thought. This is a good thing, because you are known by God! And when you honor others especially those in authority, you are honoring God.
The Bible states when our relationship is right with God through Jesus, then we will no doubt be right with all our earthly relationships.
So, until next month, let’s honor one another especially those in authority.
Love,
Grandpa
