Dear Grandchildren:
I would like to continue my thoughts concerning why businesses and individuals are successful. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, medical doctor, teacher, store clerk, or work in an office, how you relate to those around you will determine your success.
Someone once said, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” How you treat others, especially your customers is very important and many times determine how successful you will be. If you genuinely have an interest in others and serve them well, they will recognize that. It always works in your favor.
When we eat in a restaurant, which is often especially since we’re down in Florida, we can tell right away whether our waitress is working for the money or working to serve us. And we love tipping waitresses who enjoy serving us.
I’d like to share a story of a superstar in our family who goes the second mile when serving her customers. About six years ago, we made our farm into a wedding event center. Sarah Ann sat down with us and tried to explain the complexity of providing a place for weddings, but we didn’t really understand what she was saying. The good thing that came out of that conversation is that Sarah told us, “I’ll join you in this venture.” And we are so glad she did.
We have a wonderful team of people at Sonshine Barn including Jessica, Sarah Soon, Veronica, Nancy, Bill, and others, but it’s Sarah Ann who lives to give every bride the wedding of their dreams. She challenges all of us to do our jobs with the thought of serving the brides.
Whether it’s mowing the lawn, cleaning rooms, making phone calls, or serving food, it’s all about fulfilling the dreams of the bride. Her favorite phrase is, “We have to be spot on.”
The amazing thing is, Sarah Ann doesn’t have to work, but something inside her heart wants to serve brides. And because of that, our business is an enormous success.
That’s why, Grandchildren, as you consider a vocation, consider something you enjoy doing that you can do with your whole heart. If you do, I’m sure you will be the happiest and the most successful.
And if you do, I’m sure I’ll see you at the top!
I love you,
Grandpa
